Pleasure, Pain, Joy and Anxiety
“In his 1983 essay, “The Sublime and the Avant-Garde”, Jean-Francois Lyotard theorises a sublime to be found in the work of minimalist painter Barnet Newman. Lyotard claimed that the experience of the Romantic sublime was concerned with expressing a “contradictory feeling–pleasure and pain, joy and anxiety, exaltation and depression” and, by extension, the same sensory experience could be found in images that were concerned not with mountain peaks and fiery destruction, but with the experience of colour”
‘the f word’ is my senior fashion design collection from Cornell University. It is a collection for women by women where literal and figurative metaphors are sewn into the seams. Through revealing and concealing parts of the body, replicating the power suit, and my use of colors and textures, there is an appropriate balance of femininity and masculinity that is reflects the modern notion of feminism in today’s time.
FEMINISM IS FUCKING FEIRCE AND FABULOUS.
